We are delighted to announce the publication of “A viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model for glassy polymers informed by molecular dynamics simulations” in the International Journal of Solids and Structures. Lead by Wuyang Zhao, we have developed a complex inelastic material model that can reproduce both viscoelastic and viscoplastic effects. It is based on a thermodynamically consistent parallel combination of the generalized Maxwell framework and calibrated with data obtained from molecular dynamics simulations. This purely numerical approach allows isolation of individual effects, e.g., plasticity, which would not be possible with real experiments. The resulting VE-VP model is notable for its broad range of validity and the comparatively small number of only 10 material parameters.
